In the first quarter of 2026, unusually heavy rains swept across Southern Africa, exposing the growing vulnerability of communities to climate-driven disasters. Among the hardest hit were the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, where relentless rainfall triggered floods that devastated towns and villages. Rivers overflowed, critical infrastructure was destroyed and roads were washed away, leaving entire communities isolated and in urgent need.
The floodwaters did not just reshape the landscape; they changed lives. In Mpumalanga alone, 18 people lost their lives. Families were forced to leave behind their homes, possessions and livelihoods, suddenly cut off from basics like food, clean water and essential supplies.
Recognising the scale of the disaster, the South African government declared it a national emergency. This paved the way for a coordinated response to reach those most affected.
Sasria’s broader commitment: Beyond insurance
As the crisis unfolded, Gift of the Givers, one of Africa’s largest disaster response organisations, mobilised swiftly to help the hardest-hit areas. Supporting this effort, Sasria demonstrated its wider commitment to social impact and went beyond its core business of special risk insurance.
Through this partnership, emergency supplies, including food, bottled water and hygiene kits, were distributed to isolated families. This addressed urgent needs and provided comfort in a time of upheaval.
Relief on the ground
In Limpopo, aid was delivered to Mabula and Makhuba villages, supporting 300 people. In Mpumalanga, Ward 11 of the Nkomazi Local Municipality, including Goba, Ericks Ville and Hhoyi villages, received similar assistance for another 300 beneficiaries. Altogether, 600 people across both provinces gained immediate support, helping them bridge the gap as recovery began.
Behind every parcel is a family working to regain stability after disaster. Relief efforts like this matter not only for the aid itself, but for the reassurance that communities are not alone when it matters most.
