Frequently Asked Questions

Underwriting

? Please clarify looting and when this will be a valid claim under Sasria?

Looting is not a stand-alone Sasria peril and will only be considered as a valid claim in terms of Sasria if it occurs during an active Sasria peril for which Sasria accepts liability.

? How is the security cost extension covered in terms of Sasria?

Sasria has split the security extension cover into two and this only applies to the Sasria Fire and Contract works policies. Rate applicable to this extension depends on the section it is added onto i.e. Fire rate applicable if insured under this section, Contract works rate applicable if insured under this section. 1. Imminent danger – protection of property prior a loss is limited to R10m annual aggregate (this responds before a loss occurs). 2. Normal security cost cover – protection of property after a loss, the limit for this cover is according to underlying policy limit, can be greater that R10m (this responds after a loss occurs).

? Is Security Costs cover provided under Goods in Transit and Plant?

Security Costs cover is not provided for a moving risk under the Goods In Transit. The cover provided is to safeguard the insured’s premises on a policy level. NB: Security Costs cover is not provided for Plant items as the cover is for the contract site and not plant items.

? Must multiple fire rating categories sums insured be combined to calculate the magnitude discount?

Yes. When calculating the magnitude discount, we use the multiple fire category sums insured.

? Must the same magnitude discount that was used at the renewal of a coupon be used in the event of an extension of the coupon?

Magnitude discount is calculated at renewal or inception of a coupon policy and may not be recalculated mid-term where there are mid term policy adjustments. The only exception is where there are acquisitions or disinvestments of COMPANIES.

Claims

? What are the typical reasons a claim may not be settled, and what is the turnaround time to receive formal communication about it?

Claims may be declined for a few common reasons. These may include not having enough evidence to show that the loss or damage was caused by a peril covered by Sasria, if claims that have prescribed (12 months for Motor claims and 24 months for non-motor claims), or claims that fall under Sasria policy exclusions such as Prevention of Access or Business Interruption losses without material damage.

Once all required documents are received, the Sasria Claims forum will make a liability decision, and communicate within five (5) working days.

? Why does Sasria close claims as Not Taken Up?

When a claim cannot progress because the required information or documents have not been received from the claimant, the claim will be closed as Not Taken Up (NTU) as per the Sasria Claims Process. This means Sasria was unable to process the claim due to missing details. The claim will be closed after a set period, and once closed as an NTU, it may not be reopened. To avoid this, please ensure all necessary documents are submitted in full and on time.

? How do I follow up on my claim?

? Is proof of premium required even when the Sasria coupon has been sent, and what documentation is accepted as proof?

Yes, proof of premium is required. While the Sasria coupon confirms that cover is in place, Sasria still requires proof that premiums have been paid correctly for the relevant period. This can be confirmed through documents such as the policy schedule, proof of premium payment (such as a bank statement, receipt, or official payment confirmation), and the coupon itself. These documents should clearly indicate who the insured is, the Sasria cover sections selected, the risk address, the premium paid and payment period. Together, they confirm that the policy is active and that any claim is processed under the correct terms.

? How long does Sasria take to process the claim?

Claim processing timelines depend on the on the complexity of the claim. Fast-track claims include Motor and Non-motor claims of up to R500 000, these are usually finalised within 25 days. More complex claims such as non-motor claims above R500 000, may take up to 50 days to process. Delays can occur if the required information or documents are incomplete or not submitted on time.

? How do I submit a Sasria claim?

The underlying insurer must first assess the information provided by the insured to determine whether the loss or damage could be Sasria related. If the insurer is satisfied that a Sasria peril may apply, the agent company must submit the claim to Sasria within 30 days of loss or damage, or as soon as the insurer becomes aware that a Sasria peril maybe involved.
